The Bisti/De-Na-Zin is a designated wilderness area managed by the Bureau of Land Management near Farmington, New Mexico. What has always struck me about this area, aside from its diverse and fantastic land forms, is the feeling of silence that can be experienced there. As there are no trails, or rather there aren’t supposed to be any, its easy to encounter landscapes that feel like they have somehow slipped the notice of people and remain as they have been stretching back through history. Unfortunately every time I return, the signs of human presence, from the sound of oil pump-jacks along the border to signs left behind by careless people, have increased. I return whenever possible to photograph before the Bisti/De-Na-Zin begins to feel like a regulated park for the tourist and looses its magic.
